FOLLOW-UP TO RUN, WALK 'N WHEELATHON EDMONTON
Event was held on Friday, July 23, 2010
The second annual Run, Walk ‘N Wheelathon in Edmonton, Alberta Canada was held on Friday, July 23. Edmonton is the second largest city in Alberta after Calgary and is the hub of Canada's sixth-largest census metropolitan area.
The weather held up for this event and the 130 participants experienced the thrill of a lifetime, running, walking or wheeling around the temporary race course at City Centre Airport in conjunction with the Honda Indy Edmonton.
Approximately $12,000 was raised on behalf of the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation as well as three Canadian based organizations: the Aaron Moser Spinal Cord Injury Foundation, the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and Shoot For A Cure. The money raised will fund spinal cord research being done in Canada.
Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation Board member Tom Villardi was on hand to represent the Foundation, and also facilitated hospitality arrangements for race participants who wished to return to the track on Saturday to watch the race practice action.
Said Tom Villardi, "I enjoy meeting all the folks who participate in our fundraising events, especially those who are paralyzed or have other disabilities. Listening to their stories better prepares me for my own fundraising efforts on behalf of the Foundation and reminds me how important each and every one of us are in our mission to cure paralysis."
Run, Walk ‘N Wheelathon events have enjoyed increasing success. The events are very popular with athletes of all abilities, who take advantage of the opportunity to bring out their whole families for an evening of fun and exercise. Besides raising money, these events serve to increase awareness of spinal cord injury, research and treatments.
