Ex-Racer Pins Hope On Stem Cell Research
reprinted from Associated Press
MADISON - Former race driver Sam Schmidt isn't kidding himself. He doesn't expect stem cell research to let him jump out of his wheelchair.
"It won't be a magic pill," Schmidt said after coming to Madison for the World Stem Cell Summit this week. "I'm not going to immediately go in for a procedure and come out walking."
Schmidt, who lives in Henderson, Nev., was an Indy car driver before a crash in 2000 left him a quadriplegic.
"The things that you miss are the things you take for granted, I mean, being able to hug my wife, being able to pick my kids up, put them on my shoulders," Schmidt said.
At the summit, hundreds of top researchers, advocates and investors in stem cell research gathered Monday and Tuesday to chart the future of the field.
Schmidt, who heads his own racing team, is helping fund stem cell research through the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation.
He said being able to walk would be his ultimate dream, but "having the potential to frankly even just move my arms, being able to hug my kids -- if I can get that amount of function back, that would be like winning the Indy 500 10 times."
