THE SAM SCHMIDT FOUNDATION TO HOST
INAUGURAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (August 30, 2006) – Sam Schmidt, the former IndyCar Series driver who became a quadriplegic following a racing practice accident in 2000, has added another fund raising event to his long list of philanthropic activities designed to help victims of spinal cord injuries and their families.
The inaugural Sam Schmidt Foundation “Racing to Recover” Charity Golf Tournament will be held at the South Shore Golf Club in Henderson, NV on Monday, October 30, 2006. Schmidt resides in Las Vegas and remains active in IndyCar racing as a team owner in the Indy Pro Series, a support circuit to the IndyCar Series.
A host of celebrities from the racing, sporting and entertainment communities are expected to participate in the event that will be held on the exclusive, Jack Nicklaus-designed, 18-hole, 6,917-yard South Shore course at the spectacular Lake Las Vegas Resort. Located just minutes from downtown Las Vegas, South Shore has been recognized several times for being among the country’s Top 10 courses by Golf Digest.
Various sponsorship packages priced from $100 to $10,000 for both corporations and individuals are available for the Tournament that will feature a shotgun format starting at 10:30.
Among some of the benefits sponsors are eligible to receive in addition to spectacular golf, are a private clinic, lunch, prizes, a Happy Hour, strolling buffet and awards ceremony.
Schmidt was in the hunt for the 1999 IRL championship up to the season’s final event. He won that season’s race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and led the Indianapolis 500. He crashed at the Walt Disney World Speedway in January 2000 as he was preparing for the upcoming season. The injuries Sam sustained in that wreck left him paralyzed from the neck down.
Refusing to lose his competitive spirit, Sam then dedicated his life to helping those afflicted with spinal cord injuries and other life-altering disabilities.
He formed the Foundation bearing his name shortly after the accident and has established several very successful fund raising activities that have become annual events. The inaugural Sam Schmidt Foundation “Racing to Recovery” Charity Golf Tournament is the latest of Sam’s creations. Sam has also become an ardent supporter of stem cell research and other causes related to finding a cure for paralysis. The monies raised will fund research and Quality of Life Grants to support organizations directly assisting people with disabilities.
