RUN, WALK, WHEELATHONS

After years of persistent knocking at the doors of racetrack administrators and promoters, in 2009 Ida Cahill was successful in scheduling two “Run, Walk & Wheelathon” events.

On Thursday July 9, over 400 runners, walkers and wheelers joined the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and Shoot For A Cure Moto Sport at the first Run/Walk/Wheelathon, presented by the Toronto Sun.  Approximately $12,000 was raised while uniting various organizations, who together are working to find a cure for paralysis.

The event was so well received that we moved on to Sonoma, CA, where we held a Run/Walk/Wheelathon at Infineon Raceway on August 20, again in cooperation with Shoot for a Cure Moto Sport.  Participants were able to race on a modified version of the race course used by the IndyCar Series.  Funds raised will go towards funding paralysis research, helping the almost six million people in the United States who have some form of paralysis.  The local money raised will be distributed to local hospitals and research centers in the area.

Everyone who ran, walked, wheeled or just helped at our Run/Walk/Wheelathons had a great time.  Although undoubtedly labor-intensive, these events were successful in terms of fundraising as well as media exposure, and also provided positive PR for tracks/promoters.

Now that we can show a “track record” (pardon the pun) of successful, safe events, we expect to expand the Run/Walk/Wheelathon program to more locations in 2010.  Our ultimate goal is to reach the day when racetrack administrators call Ida and ask, “Are you going to schedule a Run/Walk/Wheelathon event at our track this season?”
