Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation Hosts Day at the Races
Sparta, Kentucky, August 8, 2008
The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation (SSPF) is hosting one of its celebrated "Day at the Races" Programs at The Kentucky Speedway Aug. 8. These motivational day-long events held throughout the year at various racetrack locations across the country, provide support, hope, and empowerment to individuals and families coping with paralysis and other neurological diseases.
SSPF collaborates with local rehabilitation centers and organizations for the disabled, inviting patients and their families to attend a behind-the-scenes guided tour and enjoy an opportunity to meet famous drivers and watch races. The event will feature guest motivational speakers and celebrity appearances. Sam Schmidt, founder of the SSPF, will share the story of his race-car related injury and talk about how continuing to be involved in his passion for racing actually helps him remain positive and energized despite his struggles with paralysis. The program places a great emphasis on how disabled people can find employment opportunities, rather than accepting a life of social welfare. Participants are provided with encouragement and practical information about how to live with these injuries.
In addition, speakers will address other areas of concern including transition from impatient rehabilitation to the home, insurance problems, family, and transportation. United Medical Providers, a company that has been serving the medical supply and equipment needs of thousands of clients in the United States since 1996 supplying urological needs with a complete line of quality products, will show its support by serving refreshments under a special tent at the event. Superior Van and Mobility will also be on site providing an accessible van and information for guests.
The Standing Company is a third organization that will attend, the manufacturer of special equipment which allows paralyzed individuals to safely stretch out their bodies from the usual up-right wheel-chair position, increasing blood flow and preventing skin breakdowns. As a remembrance of the day, participants will be given racing memorabilia, products from participating sponsors, and contact information of attendees to develop new friendships, support, and peer mentoring.
The program aims to have a lasting positive impact upon attendees. Those previously injured gain a sense of community and self-worth by providing mentor-like support to those who have only recently become injured. Those newly injured will leave at the end of the day with a renewed sense of enthusiasm towards physical therapy and learning to live with the injury. This "Day at the Races" Program will be held Aug. 8, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Speedway on 5120 Sparta Pike in Sparta, Ky.
The program is limited to people with spinal cord injuries / paralysis. For more information or reservations, contact Amber at (317) 796-0537 or
