2012 SAM SCHMIDT PARALYSIS FOUNDATION/SELL FUND OF ASIA YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANT ANNOUNCED
SHANNON D. SULLIVAN, MD, PhD RECEIVES AWARD
At the recent American Spinal Injury Association's (ASIA) annual meeting in Denver, Dr. Shannon D. Sullivan of the Department of Medicine/Endocrinology at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. was announced as the recipient of the 2012 Schmidt/Sell Young Investigator Grant. The Grant offers a one year, $15,000 award and is supported equally by the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and the Sell Research Fund of ASIA. The title of Dr. Sullivan's project is: "Does hypogonadism contribute to increased cardiometabolic risk in men with spinal cord injury?"
Dr. Sullivan did her undergraduate work at the College of William & Mary, and received her medical education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She did graduate education in the UVA Medical Scientist Training Program (Neuroscience), and her internship and Residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. She completed a fellowship at the NIH/NICHD Endocrine Training Program in Bethesda, MD. She has been on staff in the Department of Endocrinology at Washington Hospital Center since 2010.
The Schmidt/Sell Award has been given annually since 2009. The grant stipulates that the recipient will return to the first ASIA meeting after completing the work being supported, to present progress report. A narrative of this presentation will appear in the ASIA journal, "Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation." Drs. Ghosh and Ibrahim presented on their grants at the 2011 ASIA meeting. Dr. Crew will present in 2013.
