LIFELOCK TO SUPPORT THE SAM SCHMIDT PARALYSIS FOUNDATION
Portion of membership to be donated to help overcome spinal cord injuries
(Scottsdale, AZ, Aug. 12, 2005) - LIFELOCK, the world’s only preventative ID Theft measure, has announced a special partnership with the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation that will raise funds to help individuals overcome spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders through scientific research, medical treatment, rehabilitation and technological advances.
Starting immediately, anyone who signs up for the LIFELOCK ID Theft Prevention service (www.lifelock.com) and uses the special promotion code (SSPF) will have the equivalent of 15% of their membership fee donated to the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, for the entire term of their membership. Cost for the service is $10 a month or $100 a year and provides members with a no worry answer to the crime of ID Theft.
“I have known Sam for a long time and have had the opportunity to see what his foundation is doing to help find a cure for paralysis,” said LIFELOCK CEO Todd Davis. “Our company wanted to help support him, foundation and the families that have to deal with these life changing events everyday. I hope that everyone will take the opportunity to allow us to protect them from ID Theft as Sam’s Foundation continues to find ways to better the lives of spinal cord injury victims.”
“I appreciate the wonderful partnership we are starting with the people at LIFELOCK,” noted Sam Schmidt. “Like a spinal cord injury, ID Theft is something that changes your life and never makes you feel the same again. Our foundation will continue to grow and support those who are in need thanks to the generosity of companies like LIFELOCK.”
A former Indy Racing League driver and now owner of Sam Schmidt Motorsports, Sam Schmidt had a dream to compete in the Indy 500, and in 1997 he embarked on his first year of Indy Racing League (IRL) competition. He quickly emerged as an IRL star, making 27 career starts and earning a victory and a pole, both in his hometown of Las Vegas.
On January 6, 2000, Sam and the team were in Orlando, Florida practicing at the Walt Disney World Speedway. As his car exited turn two, it hit the wall with a tremendous impact. Sam was airlifted to a nearby hospital in extremely critical condition and diagnosed later as a quadriplegic; the result of a severe injury to his spinal cord at the C-3/C-4 levels and was on a respirator for 5 weeks. Even with these devastating injuries, Sam realized he was one of the lucky ones. Although he has regained neck strength and partial shoulder movement, Sam remains paralyzed from the chest down. Doctors have not ruled out a partial or complete recovery, but it could take several years.
LIFELOCK uses a system of “locks” on a consumer’s identity in such a way that it cannot be used by anyone except its rightful owner. The service uses a combination of tactics that include locking up all information, setting and maintaining alerts, forcing banks to contact people directly before issuing credit and removing a member from pre-approved credit card lists. LIFELOCK also claims that its system is so effective that they back it with a $1 million guarantee to cover any expenses and legal fees if a problem ever did happen.
